Background History
Kenya Danvers is the eldest child of Richard, a geologist, and Marion, a bestselling mystery author. Kenya's brother Herman runs a private shipyard dealing mostly in luxury space liners and smaller yachts.
As a child she always gazed at the stars and loved the whole idea of space travel. Though oddly, she never considered joining Starfleet. Ken was independent as a child and thought that she would get her own ship eventually and do her own exploring. She clearly inherited her mother’s inquisitive nature.
Kenya was about to enroll at the Daystrom Academy when the man that would eventually become her mentor, Lt. Commander Braja, a Tellarite Flight Instructor, approached her. Kenya's pilot skills were second to none and he felt she could best serve her future desires by taking advantage of all Starfleet training had to offer. He sponsored her and got her into the officer's track early on.
She did very well at the academy. Kenya excelled at the academics especially analytical functions and problem solving. Growing up she would always question her mother about the novel she was writing and the techniques her protagonist, Jane Slater, would use to solve the crimes.
She went into the Flight Control track and qualified in every category available ranging from shuttles on up to starships. While she did this she was studying a minor in Forensics. Kenya gets bored easily. She always has. So when she wasn't flying something she was learning the business of mystery solving through science.
Right before graduation is when the Dominion War officially began. The rumblings had been there but with the formal declaration of war came shock that this set of new graduates would be thrust into open conflict right out of the Academy.
Kenya was assigned to Starbase 375 much to her surprise. She fully expected to get a starship billet. Upon her arrival she was tasked with aiding the tactical staff there in determining the capabilities of Dominion vessels, weapons, and their tactics. She was naturally upset that her flight skills were not being utilized however she did help make several breakthroughs in understanding their adversary.
Eventually she was assigned to the USS Hood as the senior flight control officer. Kenya performs with great skill during the Battle of Deep Space 9 and the First Battle of Chin'toka. She receives commendations for both engagements.
As the losses mounted during the war, so did the number of friends Kenya lost. It took a heavy toll on her to lose so many classmates. She made a point of keeping in touch with all of her remaining classmates and they made a promise to get together as a group again when the war was finally over.
Kenya is briefly re-assigned by Admiral William Ross to pilot his Flagship for the final push to Cardassia that ends the Dominion War. Her skillful piloting earns her another commendation at the war's end. After the war Kenya keeps her promise and organizes a get together for her remaining classmates. The affair is somber yet it also helps her make a decision to remain in Starfleet and try to stop conflicts like this before they happen.
After entering Command school, she begins to put together a paper geared towards presenting the Federation with a new division that would combine investigative and diplomatic methods to identify and neutralize potential dangers to the Federation and it's allies. Kenya researches the paper for years as her career status increases and she is given greater responsibilities with every assignment.
Kenya presents her paper at a Tactical Symposium and it is generally shot down by most stating that Starfleet Intelligence handles these events. The paper is buried for years. Her mentor, now Commodore Braja is impressed and keeps the paper close at hand. Kenya is disappointed by the events at symposium but is re-invigorated when she is selected to be Executive Officer aboard the U.S.S. Bellerophon.
She served with distinction aboard the Bellerophon and after three years, was transferred to the Galaxy-Class U.S.S. Venture as her Executive Officer. Kenya met Commander Colin Bryce and carried on a relationship that ended when she discovered Bryce was selling Federation technology to non-aligned worlds, and arrested him. Heartbroken, she found and requested a command that took her into deep space for two years. Promoted to Captain, Kenya was given command of the U.S.S. Madison.
Again distinction found her and she was instrumental in uncovering an enclave of the Orion Syndicate running a slavery ring beyond the Delta Triangle. At home, Commodore Braja and Chancellor Martok of the Klingon Empire, meet with the Federation Council to discuss disturbing occurrences within both nations. Braja presents Kenya’s paper to Martok and the Council. They are duly impressed and decide that Captain Danvers “Special Services” Division be funded and immediately made operational.
Braja recalls Kenya to tell her that she will be given a new command and will act as the first commanding officer of the newly completed U.S.S. Ariadne. The Ariadne and her crew is the first vessel in the new Special Services Division devised by Kenya. She is excited yet humbled by all of this. It is a great responsibility to have to put words on paper into action. Kenya believes she is up for the task.
